Now Everest is officially 8848.86 m

Nepal and China both countries jointly announced the newly calculated height of Mt Everest and i.e 8848.86 m. Now it is official that the height of Mt Everest is 8848.86 m.

This is the first time that Nepal has measured the height of Sagarmatha (in Nepal) and Chomolongma (in China) the Mt Everest by own resources. Indeed Nepal had taken measuring the height of Everest as “national pride” project in 2017 and started measuring from 2017. By the way, Nepal has 8 highest peaks among 14 peaks in the world but has not measured the peak by its own before.

In 2005, Chinese survey team had estimated that it elevates around 8844 m from sea level. But Nepal did not recognize it. Nepal had recognized the height of Mt Everest is 8848 m by the survey of India which was also the widely accepted estimation until the joint announcement of December 6, 2020.

Why Mt Everest height was measured second time ?

Mt Everest height measurement is taken several times because it is in the Himalayan range while the Himalayan range is situated in between Indian and Tibetan tectonic plates. So, earthquake or volcanic event often occurs beneath of the Himalaya which can cause the change of height of mountains of Himalaya. So, Mt Everest Height was measured second time.
