Overview
The Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal is a hidden treasure, offering an adventure that stands apart from the more frequented Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp treks. Nestled between the Dhaulagiri massif and the Tibetan plateau, this remote trail leads you through untouched landscapes, rugged passes, and serene terrains far from tourist crowds.
Unspoiled by modern development, the trek takes you through the higher reaches of Dolpo, primarily within the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. The journey offers a unique experience, with stunning rugged scenery, towering passes, and isolated villages steeped in the ancient Buddhist and Bon Po traditions, all influenced by Tibetan culture.
One of the highlights of the trek is Shey-Phoksundo Lake, a pristine turquoise body of water 1,500 feet deep and situated at 3,589 meters. Surrounded by lush pine forests and snow-capped peaks, the lake adds a magical touch to this remote region. Additionally, trekkers will cross five challenging high passes, including Kang La Pass (5,380 m), Saldang La Pass (5,060 m), Chharka La Pass (5,015 m), Upper Sanga La Pass (5,515 m), and Lower Sanga La Pass (5,035 m).
As you traverse ancient monasteries and mystical, secluded lands, the region remains a restricted area, open to tourism only since 1989. For those seeking adventure, the Upper Dolpo Trek provides the perfect challenge.
This demanding trek lasts over three weeks, making it unsuitable for beginners without prior experience. Starting with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then onward to Jhupal, the trek officially begins on foot as you journey towards Dunai. Along the way, you will pass through ancient villages before reaching Phoksundo Lake. From there, the trail continues, leading you over high passes and through more remote settlements.
After completing the trek, you’ll return to Jhupal, followed by a flight back to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu, marking the end of this unforgettable adventure. Despite its length and difficulty, the Upper Dolpo Trek offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore some of Nepal’s most pristine and remote wilderness.
Best time and Seasons to Trek Upper Dolpo in Nepal
Weather plays a crucial role in determining the best trekking destination and time. While it’s possible to trek in Nepal year-round, each season comes with its own advantages and challenges. Most trekkers, however, prefer the spring and autumn seasons due to the more favorable weather conditions during these times.
When it comes to the Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal, it can be undertaken year-round, but spring, summer, and autumn are considered the ideal times. During spring, the weather is mild, with low rainfall, creating perfect trekking conditions. The lower regions tend to be warmer, while the higher elevations are moderate, making for a pleasant trek. With clear skies, spring offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges along the trail.
Autumn is another excellent season for trekking in Upper Dolpo. The temperatures are moderate, with mild winds and minimal precipitation. The sun shines brightly, and the crisp, clear skies create a pristine environment for trekking.
Although the region receives less rainfall due to its position in the rain shadow, trekking Upper Dolpo in summer is still a viable option. Regardless of the season, it’s important to be well-prepared and gather accurate information about the weather and conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
What is Upper Dolpo Trek Difficulty Level?
The Upper Dolpo Trek is considered a difficult to challenging-grade trek in the Dolpo region of Nepal. As a restricted area that is rarely visited and prohibits solo trekking, this trek is physically and mentally more demanding than other trekking routes in Nepal.
This trek, classified as Grade C or adventure trekking, is more strenuous than moderate-level treks. It involves crossing high passes above 5000 meters and trekking for approximately 6-8 hours per day.
Due to the challenging nature of this trek, previous trekking experience is recommended, along with good physical fitness and stamina. Since the Dolpo treks involve walking over rugged terrain for more than three weeks, it is advisable to undergo physical training beforehand, such as walking, hiking, or cycling.
The trek is ideal for adventurers seeking a challenging journey of over two weeks, exploring remote and rugged landscapes.
Accommodation and Meals During Dolpo Trekking
Accommodation and meals in the Dolpo region are quite basic. The trekking route to Upper Dolpo was opened to outsiders in 1989, and accommodation facilities are still developing. The Upper Dolpo Trek primarily follows a camping-style setup, requiring trekkers to adapt to remote conditions. You’ll spend your nights in a sturdy two-person camping tent, equipped with a durable sleeping bag and a clean mattress. In recent years, a few tea houses have been established along the route.
For meals, trekkers can enjoy authentic Nepali cuisine. The menu typically includes dal (lentil soup), bhat (rice), tarkari (vegetable curry), and various side dishes, along with bread, butter, eggs, and some Western food options.
